It's what I do......

So most of my friends and family ask me, "Isaac, what do you do for work???"   Most of the times, I reply to them this, "oh, well I work in the oil fields.  I'm a roughneck."    Well hell, that is not very descriptive of what I do.   Here it is!

My official title is Top Drive Tech.   What the hell is a top drive tech????   Start you out with the basic.   Is is a oil rig.

These are some of the newest rigs in Ensign United States drilling.   These rigs look scary but the new technology has taken the workers away from the danger.    One of the technology that take the rig workers away is called a top drive.

This is a top drive unit.    I consist of a lot of moving parts, electrical, and hydraulics.   When ever there is a thing that breaks down I end up troubleshooting or replacing a part.   And most of the time, we are suspended up in the air for long period of time.     I am basically a mechanic.    So since the breakdowns are unpredictable, I am on call 24 hrs.    My work schedule two weeks on and one week off.   This job is pretty demanding for the time that you put into it.

Last night, we ended up receiving a call for a ripped service loop (if you look at the picture above there are black hoses that hang down.   The right one is the service loop).     Pretty much they ripped the lines apart.     We replace hoses and wires all night long and took about 12 hrs.  Although it seems hard, It was quite easy to fix and replace, yet very time consuming.

I love my job and enjoy what I do, Although I would eventually want to end up with a job that I could go home to every night.   If you have any questions with my job ask me.    (and if you are interested in working in this type of work, ask me, they might be hiring)
